Many people are familiar with Chabad as the Jewish organization which provides services for communities around the world. Against all odds, since the destruction of half of world Jewry in the holocaust, thousands of Chabad centers have developed throughout the world, inspiring Jewish life where you would least expect it.
There are few on the other hand that are familiar with the core teachings that lie at the foundation of this powerful movement.
Before Chabad became busy providing basic Jewish needs, Chabad’s primary objective was to teach Chabad Mysticism, otherwise known as Chassidus.
There are thousands and thousands of pages which make up the vast Chabad library, and the founders and masters of ChassIdus literally risked their lives to teach these pearls of wisdom, often incarcerated in Russian Soviet prison for doing so.
To understand why the Chabad masters gave up everything to share these ideas, it is worth looking at a letter written by the founder of the Chassidic movement. Rabbi Yisrael, the Baal Shemtov writes that it is the sharing of these ideas that are instrumental in perfecting the world.
Jewish tradition teaches us that the purpose of all existence is to bring about a time where there will be no hatred or jealousy, no suffering or illness. Death itself will no longer exist along with any negativity. This era is known as the Messianic age.
And it is the teaching of Chabad Mysticism which makes it possible for such a reality to exist.
So, what are these teachings? What could be so powerful as to have rejuvenated thousands of communities after the holocaust, and what ideas could change the world so drastically as to rid us of all evil and bring about a true Utopia?
In this series, I would like to present a crash course in Chabad mysticism, and I hope you enjoy.
